The Bible in the Byzantine-Slavic World – from Liturgical Books to Printed Scripture

Waldemar Ceran Research Centre for the History and Culture of the Mediterranean Area and South-East Europe, Ceraneum, University of Łódź; Department of Slavic Studies, University of Łódź; Department of Byzantine History, University of Łódź; Slavic Bible Commission of the International Committee of Slavists and the University of Florence would like to invite you to the international conference The Bible in the Byzantine-Slavic World – from Liturgical Books to Printed Scripture (May 19–21 2016).

The focus of the symposium participants will primarily be laid on the manuscripts that contain texts and commentaries concerning the Old and New Testament, including those intended for liturgical services. Moreover, the issues regarding the  first printed Slavic versions of the Bible, as well as the connections between the Greek (Byzantine) and Slavic monuments will be discussed. The topic of the digitization of Slavonic biblical texts, their electronic editions and online databases is yet another subject to be debated. Scientists from various fields of the humanities are invited to attend.

Prof. Maciej Kokoszko – chairman of the Committee for Byzantine Studies

We are pleased to inform that Prof. Maciej Kokoszko, Director of the Ceraneum Centre and head of the Department of Byzantine History, has been elected chairman of the  Committee for Byzantine Studies at the Polish Historical Society (formerly functioning as a part of the Committee of Studies on Ancient Culture, Polish Academy of Sciences).

It is the largest scientific organization, that brings together Polish Byzantinists (almost a hundred members). Secretary of the new term will be Ph.D. Andrzej Kompa, also a member of the Ceraneum Centre and employee of the Department of Byzantine History.

These titles are the result of the NCN grant Food for the body and soul. Nutrition and culinary arts of antiquity and early Byzantium, 2nd-7th centuries, carried out by a team led by Dr. Hab. Prof. of the UŁ M. Kokoszko in the Department of Byzantine History of the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the UŁ  in 2011–2014.

The books can be bought at the online bookstore of the Łódź University Publishing House.

New research project in the Ceraneum Centre

We are pleased to inform, that on February 5, 2015 the National Science Centre announced the results of the recent grant competitions, and among the projects, that have received funding, was another of the Ceraneum Centre.

The project Bulgarian State in 927-969. The Epoch of Tsar Peter I the Pious (the Harmonia 6 program, panel HS) will be carried out in the Ceraneum Centre by a team led by Prof. Mirosław Leszka from the Department of History of Byzantium, University of Łódź, in collaboration with the University of Sofia (Bulgaria). The result of the three-year grant is to be a book publication.
